Whether this is your first time getting permanent brows, you are returning for a color refresh or you have previous brow work that you would like corrected or improved, I begin every appointment with a personalized consultation.
You do not need to know which technique you want before coming in. Part of my job is to determine which method or combination of methods is best suited to your natural brows, skin, previous work, and desired result.
Depending on your needs, I may recommend:
- Microblading for a natural, hair-stroke appearance
- Nano Hair Strokes for fine, machine-crafted detail
- Ombré / Magic Shading for a soft, powdered makeup effect
- Combination Brows for a blend of hair strokes and shading
Are You a Good Candidate for Permanent Brows?
Before beginning any permanent brow procedure, I will review your brow history, skin condition and overall health during your consultation to determine whether permanent makeup is appropriate for you.
Permanent brows may not be recommended or may need to be postponed if you have:
- Active skin irritation, rashes, sunburn, acne, or psoriasis in the brow area
- An illness such as a cold or flu
- Certain medical conditions that require additional discussion or approval from your healthcare provider
- Recent cosmetic treatments near the brow area, such as Botox, chemical peels or other skin resurfacing treatments
- Pregnancy or nursing
- Conditions or medications that may affect healing, pigment retention, or skin sensitivity
My priority is always your safety and achieving the best possible healed result. If I believe waiting, preparing your skin, or taking another approach would provide a better outcome, I will explain my recommendation before proceeding.
1. Consultation
I begin by talking with you about your brows and what you would like to achieve.
If this is your first time getting permanent brows, I will ask about:
- How you currently shape or fill in your brows
- Areas where you feel your brows are sparse or uneven
- Whether you prefer a very natural look or more definition
- Your ideal brow shape, fullness, and overall appearance
- Your skin type and lifestyle
- Any sensitivities, allergies, medications, skincare products, or health considerations that may affect the service
If you are unsure whether microblading, nano hair strokes, shading, or a combination would be right for you, that is completely normal. During your consultation, I will evaluate your natural brow hair, skin, facial structure and desired result to help determine the most suitable approach.
How Long Will My Appointment Take?
A new permanent makeup brow appointment typically takes approximately 2 to 3 hours. This includes your consultation, brow mapping, pigment selection, the procedure and a final review of your brows.
I take the time needed to create a customized design and ensure you feel comfortable throughout the process.
2. If You Have Previous Permanent Brow Work
If you have had microblading, nano brows, powder brows, ombré brows, or another form of permanent makeup in the past, I will first evaluate the existing work.
I will look at:
- How much pigment remains
- The current color of the pigment
- Whether the previous shape still suits your face
- Existing asymmetry
- Whether previous strokes or shading have blurred or changed over time
- Whether your brows simply need refreshing or require correction
- Whether the existing pigment is light enough for me to work over successfully
Previous permanent makeup does not automatically mean I can simply cover it with new pigment.
Some brows can be refreshed during a normal appointment. Others may require color correction, shape modification, additional fading, or removal before I can safely and effectively perform new work.
If I believe working over your existing pigment would compromise the result, I will explain your options before proceeding.
3. Brow and Skin Assessment
Next, I assess your natural brows and the condition of the skin in the treatment area.
I evaluate:
- Natural brow growth and hair direction
- Brow density
- Skin type and condition
- Brow bone and facial structure
- Natural asymmetry
- Scar tissue, if present
- Existing permanent makeup
This assessment helps me determine which technique is most appropriate for your skin, brows and desired result.
4. Choosing the Right Brow Technique
Once I have evaluated your brows, skin and desired result, I will explain the techniques available and recommend the approach that is most appropriate for you.
| Brow Technique | Best For | Finish / Look | Ideal Skin Type |
| Microblading | Clients who want a natural brow enhancement with the appearance of individual hairs | Soft, natural-looking individual hair strokes | Best suited for normal to dry skin. May not be ideal for very oily skin due to potential impact on stroke retention. |
| Nano Hair Strokes | Clients who want a soft, realistic brow with fine hair detail | Delicate, ultra-soft hair strokes | Suitable for most skin types, including clients with textured or combination skin. Results may vary depending on oil production and lifestyle. |
| Ombré / Powder Shading | Clients who want a makeup-inspired brow, more definition or fuller coverage | Soft, powdered gradient finish | Excellent option for all skin types, including oily skin and larger pores. |
| Combination Brows | Clients who want both natural hair detail and added fullness | Hair strokes blended with soft shading for dimension and definition | Works well for normal, combination and some oily skin types depending on the desired result. |
5. Brow Mapping and Design
Before I begin the procedure, I carefully map and design your brows.
I take into consideration:
- Your natural brow placement
- Facial proportions
- Brow bone structure
- Existing hair growth
- Brow thickness
- Arch placement
- Tail length
- Overall balance
Once I have created the design, I will have you sit upright and review your brows in the mirror.
I want you to review the shape, thickness, arch and length. If you would like any adjustments, we can make changes before proceeding.
I will not begin any permanent work until you approve your brow design.
It is important to remember that natural faces and brows are rarely perfectly symmetrical. My goal is to create brows that look balanced and flattering while still working with your natural facial structure.
6. Pigment Selection
Once you approve the shape, I select the pigment.
I base my pigment selection on factors such as:
- Your natural brow hair
- Hair color
- Skin undertone
- Existing brow pigment
- Your desired healed result
If you have previous permanent makeup, I also take the existing pigment into consideration.
In some correction cases, I may need to use a color-correcting pigment before or during the process of creating your desired final color.
I will also explain that freshly implanted pigment normally appears darker and more intense immediately after the appointment than it will once healed.
7. Preparing for Your Procedure
In-Studio Sanitation and Comfort
Before I begin, I clean and prepare the brow area according to professional sanitation and infection-control protocols.
I use sterile, single-use supplies where required and maintain appropriate barriers throughout the procedure.
If a topical anesthetic is appropriate for your service, I will apply it according to product instructions. Sensitivity varies from person to person. You may feel light scratching, pressure, vibration or tenderness during the procedure.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment
To help support the best possible results and minimize sensitivity, please follow these guidelines before your appointment:
Before your procedure:
- Avoid working out the day of your appointment.
- Avoid tanning or arriving with a sunburned face.
- Avoid waxing, tinting or other brow services before your appointment.
- Avoid alcohol for 48 hours prior to your service.
- Be aware that caffeine and your menstrual cycle may increase sensitivity for some clients.
If you take medications or supplements that may affect bleeding or healing, please discuss them with me beforehand. Never stop prescribed medications without guidance from your healthcare provider.
8. Creating Your Custom Brows
The specific technique I use during your appointment will depend on the approach we select together:
Microblading
With microblading, I use a manual tool to create fine, hair-like strokes that mimic your natural brow growth pattern.
Nano Hair Strokes
With nano hair strokes, I use a permanent makeup machine and fine needle to create delicate hair strokes that blend naturally with your existing brow hairs.
Ombré / Magic Shading
With ombré or Magic Shading, I gradually layer pigment using a permanent makeup machine to create a soft, powdered effect. I keep the front of the brow softer while building more definition through the body and tail.
Combination Brows
With combination brows, I blend hair strokes and shading to create natural texture, fullness and definition.
Throughout the procedure, I continually evaluate your brow shape, facial balance, pigment placement and skin response while checking in to ensure you feel comfortable, informed and confident every step of the way.
9. Final Brow Check
Once I complete the procedure, I clean the brows and review the results with you while you are sitting upright.
I check the brows from multiple angles and make any appropriate final refinements.
Then I will show you your finished brows.
At this stage, your brows will usually appear:
- Darker
- Sharper
- More defined
- Slightly warmer or stronger in color
I will remind you that this is not the final healed appearance.
Your brows will soften as your skin heals.
10. The Healing Process
Before you leave, I will explain what to expect as your brows heal.
During the first several days, your brows may look darker and more dramatic than expected.
As healing progresses, you may notice:
- Mild redness or tenderness
- Dryness
- Light flaking
- Small areas of scabbing
- Temporary patchiness
- Temporary lightening of the pigment
I always tell my clients not to judge the final result until the healing process is complete.
Pigment may appear lighter in certain areas during healing, and the overall appearance will continue to change as your skin recovers.
It is very important that you do not pick, peel or scratch the treated area. Removing flakes or scabs prematurely can affect pigment retention and interfere with proper healing.
11. Aftercare
Before you leave, I will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions.
Your aftercare instructions may vary depending on your skin, the technique performed and your individual needs. Please follow the instructions provided for your specific service.
During the healing period, I may instruct you to avoid:
- Picking or scratching your brows
- Applying makeup directly over the healing area
- Excessive sweating
- Swimming
- Saunas and steam rooms
- Prolonged water exposure
- Exfoliating products
- Retinoids or strong skincare products near the brows
- Chemical treatments around the brow area
- Excessive sun exposure
Smoking may affect healing and pigment retention.
Proper aftercare plays an important role in pigment retention and the final healed result.
If you have questions during healing, I want you to contact me rather than guessing about what is normal.
12. Touch-Up Session
For many first-time permanent brow clients, the initial appointment is the first stage of the process.
A required touch-up session is scheduled approximately 6 to 8 weeks after your initial procedure, once your brows have fully healed.
At that appointment, I can evaluate:
- How your skin retained the pigment
- Areas that healed lighter
- Hairstroke retention
- Shading retention
- Overall shape and balance
- Whether any small adjustments are appropriate
Every person’s skin retains pigment differently, so some refinement after the first session is normal.
13. Returning Clients and Brow Refreshes
Permanent brows gradually fade over time.
If your existing brows still have a good shape and the remaining pigment is suitable for additional work, I may recommend a color refresh.
During a refresh, I can restore:
- Color
- Definition
- Hairstroke appearance
- Shading
- Overall brow balance
There is no single refresh schedule that works for everyone.
I evaluate each client individually because sun exposure, skincare, skin type, lifestyle, pigment selection, and individual metabolism all affect how quickly permanent makeup fades.
14. Brow Corrections
If you come to me for a correction, I will take additional time to carefully evaluate your previous permanent makeup.
I may consider correction if your previous brows have:
- Changed color
- Faded unevenly
- Lost definition
- Healed asymmetrically
- Been placed in a shape you no longer prefer
- Become blurred or overly saturated
Not every previous brow can be corrected simply by adding more pigment.
In some cases, I may recommend allowing the pigment to fade further or having some of the existing pigment removed before I perform new permanent makeup.
I would rather recommend removal or additional fading than continue layering pigment over work that will prevent me from giving you a good result.
15. LongTerm Brow Maintenance
Permanent makeup is designed to fade gradually. Factors affecting pigment longevity include:
- Skin type and lifestyle
- Sun exposure and UV rays
- Skincare routine (retinoids, exfoliants, chemical peels, and resurfacing treatments)
- Individual metabolism and immune response
- Technique used and previous permanent makeup
Once your brows are completely healed, protecting them from excessive sun exposure and following a consistent skincare routine can help maintain your results over time.
I also recommend letting skincare and cosmetic professionals know that you have permanent makeup before receiving aggressive treatments around the brow area.
What If You Don’t Know Which Brow Technique You Want?
You don’t have to decide before your appointment.
During your consultation, I will evaluate your natural brows, skin and desired result, then recommend the approach that is most appropriate for you.
My goal is to create brows that complement your features and achieve the result you want.
